Wastewater treatment plant open day a success

Hastings District Council says record numbers of people took the opportunity to find out more about how local wastewater is treated and disposed of at an open day at the weekend.

The East Clive Wastewater Treatment Plant Open Day is an annual event, and a requirement of the facility’s resource consent.

Council says numbers attending the open day have risen over the years, and last weekend 115 people from both Hastings and Napier made their way to the plant on Saturday.

Adults as well as children took a tour of the plant, starting off with a video about the treatment process. There were activity sheets for the younger one and all who came were able to ask questions of the water services staff that were present.

Wastewater treatment plant engineer, Wakefield Harland-Baker said people enjoyed the chance to visit the site and find out more.

“The feedback was very positive on both the open day, and the management of wastewater treatment in general. Some noted that it’s easy to take wastewater management for granted, for it to be out of sight and out of mind, and they were impressed with the work happening at the East Clive plant,” he said.

Visitors were also able to share their thoughts on what they think Council can to better – this feedback will feed into the scheduled nine-year review of the plant.

Residents have until 5pm Friday (24 November) to share their thoughts.
