Wellington City Council has acknowledged Greater Wellington Regional Council’s decision to prosecute the organisation and Tiaki Wai over wastewater discharges from the Moa Point Wastewater Treatment Plant.
Billions of litres of raw sewage have spilled into the city’s south coast since the wastewater treatment plant flooded in February.
“Greater Wellington Regional Council has an important and independent regulatory role. We anticipated this was likely,” Wellington City Council said in a statement.
“Wellington City Council acknowledges the seriousness of what occurred at Moa Point, and the impact it has had on the environment, residents and businesses along Wellington’s south coast.
“Wellington City Council has cooperated fully with Greater Wellington throughout its investigation and will continue to engage constructively through the Court process,” it stated.
