Regional transport leaders raise infrastructure cost concerns with Minister

Waikato transport leaders are calling for central government to take a closer look at escalating major infrastructure costs in the region, citing a significant gap between early estimates and latest funding allocations for projects such as SH1 Cambridge to Piarere.

The Waikato Regional Transport Committee has written to Transport Minister, Chris Bishop, supporting the Government’s investigation into infrastructure cost drivers, urging a broader examination of the regulatory, compliance and industry factors behind rising project costs.

Concerns over inconsistency with estimating and business case development were also raised, particularly following the pausing of Hamilton Southern Links and amid wider rates pressures across the region.

The letter was prompted by concerns raised in the September meeting of the Waikato Regional Transport Committee, a statutory forum which pulls together councillors from across the region to provide leadership on transport planning and investment.

Minister Bishop’s comments at the Civil Contractors conference in August were echoed by members of the committee, supporting his call for an independent review by Te Waihanga Infrastructure Commission to find ways to build infrastructure in a more cost-effective way.

The letter sent to Transport Minister, Chris Bishop.

“The Waikato has significant transport infrastructure needs, and it’s vital that investment is directed where it will have the greatest impact,” says committee chair and Waikato regional councillor, Liz Stolwyk.

“Working with Government, our collective goal must be to ensure every dollar spent delivers better connectivity, safer roads and stronger regional outcomes.”
