Police have provided an update on the condition of an officer who was struck by a vehicle as he attempted to lay road spikes near Palmerston North last month.
The officer was left critically injured after being hit by a fleeing vehicle and thrown several metres along Kairanga Bunnythorpe Road in the early hours of 22 August.
He was airlifted to Wellington Hospital where he remains after suffering a traumatic head injury.
Central District Commander, Superintendent Dion Bennett visited the officer and his family yesterday.
“He remains in the neurology ward at Wellington Hospital, where he is surrounded by his family and in the care of medical staff,” Supt Bennett said.
“He sustained a traumatic head injury during the incident and although he is making progress, his recovery could take some time.
“His treatment will be ongoing, and he will be moving to a specialist medical facility for head injury recovery.
“His wider Police family continue to support him and his loved ones,” he said.
Two youths, aged 14 and 15, have been charged over the crash. Both are due to reappear in the Palmerston North Youth Court next month.
