Jelly Tip batch recalled over bacteria fears

New Zealand Food Safety is supporting the Tip Top Ice Cream Company in a recall of a specific batch of its 6-pack Jelly Tip ice-cream due to the possible presence of Bacillus cereus.

“The concern with these products is that they could contain the bacteria Bacillus cereus, which can cause severe gastrointestinal illness,” says New Zealand Food Safety Deputy Director-General, Vincent Arbuckle.

These products are sold in a 6-pack cardboard box (6 x 75ml) with a best-before date of 30-SEP-28 03:00 L MO6252 to 30-SEP-28 05:00 L MO6252. The affected products are sold at Woolworths supermarkets in the North Island.

“They should not be eaten. You can return them to the place of purchase for a refund. If that’s not possible, throw them out.”

In milk or milk products, B. cereus illness usually causes diarrhoea. Symptoms will typically appear one to six hours after eating contaminated food, and most people recover within 12 to 24 hours.

New Zealand Food Safety has not received any notifications of associated illness.

However, if you have consumed any of these products and are concerned for your health, contact your health professional, or call Healthline on 0800 611 116 for free advice.

The products have been removed from store shelves and have not been exported.

“As is our usual practice, New Zealand Food Safety will work with Tip Top Ice Cream Company to understand how the contamination occurred and prevent its recurrence,” says Mr Arbuckle.
