Mauao summit open to all abilities

Accessing the stunning heights and views of Tauranga’s Mauao summit is no longer a dream for disabled people.

Starting this summer season, a new trail rider means that loved ones along with the help of friends, whanau (or guides) can now get to experience the breath-taking views already enjoyed by many locals and visitors from around New Zealand.

The trail rider is a single wheeled mobility transport supporter – the single wheel supports the rider’s weight while the handles at the front and the back allow two, three or four helpers to guide the rider up and down tracks.

To help navigate the steep terrain of Mauao, the trail rider must be operated with a minimum of four guides at all times.

On less steep terrain or tracks fewer helpers may be needed.

The trail rider:

  • folds in half making it easier to transport
  • is ergonomically designed with fully adjustable seating
  • has disc brakes
  • has a cargo compartment to hold equipment and gear.

Booking the trail rider

The trail rider is free to book and use.

Summer season bookings (1 December – 30 March)
