Raj Rajasekar who has been awarded this year’s Te Tohu Oranga Angitū | Lifetime Achievement Award at Te Hāpai Hapori | Spirit of Service Awards for his work with the Ministry for Primary Industries.
For over five decades, Mr Rajasekar has dedicated his career to serving New Zealand through some of the country’s most important international trade, food standards and biosecurity work.
Beginning as an Agricultural Economist in 1971, he has served through multiple generations of public service organisations, from the Department of Agriculture to the Ministry for Primary Industries, becoming one of New Zealand’s most respected voices in international food standards and trade policy.
Much of Mr Rajasekar’s work has taken place far from public view, but its impact has been felt across New Zealand’s economy and primary industries. As one of New Zealand’s lead negotiators on the World Trade Organisation’s Sanitary and Phytosanitary Agreement, he helped establish science-based rules that continue to provide certainty and protection for New Zealand exporters in global markets.
Through more than three decades of leadership in Codex Alimentarius, he helped shape international food standards that support export opportunities, underpin food safety systems, and strengthen New Zealand’s standing as a trusted trading nation. He was elected Vice Chair of Codex from 2021 to 2024, reflecting the high regard in which he is held internationally.
In a statement, the Public Service Commission said Mr Rajasekar was equally respected for the way he works.
“Known for his humility, integrity and ability to build consensus, he has earned trust across cultures, countries and generations. He listens carefully, brings people together, and focuses on achieving outcomes that serve something bigger than any individual interest,” the Commission stated.
“Throughout his career he has generously mentored others, ensuring New Zealand’s expertise and influence will continue long into the future. Raj’s legacy is one of quiet leadership, enduring service, and lasting benefit for New Zealand.”
The annual Spirit of Service Awards recognise initiatives and individuals delivering great outcomes for New Zealand and New Zealanders. The awards are made possible thanks to the generous support of sponsors Deloitte, ANZSOG – The Australia and New Zealand School of Government, Westpac New Zealand, and DXC Technology Australia and New Zealand.
