One Tag future for Rotorua dogs

Rotorua Lakes Council is introducing Pinetahi, the One Tag dog registration system which it says will save approximately 13,000 plastic dog tags from ending up in the landfill each year.

This May, Rotorua dog owners will be asked to register their kurī (dogs) for the 2024/2025 registration year.

Council says the registration process will be the same, however instead of receiving a plastic dog tag, a new metal tag will be supplied.

The metal tag (when used with the supplied split ring) is designed to last the average lifetime of a dog, and owners will keep the same tag each year instead of swapping them out every 12 months as they do under the current system.

“Going forward, each new registration year dog owners will be able to re-register their kurÄ« and that’s it. No more waiting for new tags to be sent out,” the Council said in a statement.

Dog registration invoices will be sent to owners via email or by post in May with a reminder about the new Pinetahi One Tag system.
