Time running out for Hamilton by-election nominations

Hamiltonians interested in standing as a councillor in Hamilton City Council’s East Ward by-election will need to get their nomination papers in by midday on Friday.

The vacancy in the Hamilton East Ward occurred following the resignation of Councillor Ryan Hamilton. So far, Council has received nine nominations for the role.

To stand as a city councillor, candidates must be:

  • a New Zealand citizen (by birth or naturalisation ceremony)
  • enrolled as a Parliamentary elector (anywhere in New Zealand on the General or Maaori roll)
  • nominated by two electors whose names appear on the general electoral roll for the Hamilton East Ward.

Anyone interested in standing is encouraged to go to hamilton.govt.nz/elections, email elections@hcc.govt.nz or phone the Deputy Electoral Officer, Amy Viggers, on 07 838 6439 to request a nomination form and find out more.

Council will publish a list of candidates at hamilton.govt.nz/elections on Friday afternoon.

Voting will open on Friday 26 January and close at midday on Saturday 17 February.
